Google has introduced Passkey as an alternative to traditional passwords
To simplify and enhance security for its users, Google has unveiled an alternative to passwords called passkeys. This new feature allows users to access their apps using the same biometric or PIN authentication they use to unlock their devices. According to Google, passkeys offer greater security and protection against online attacks, such as phishing and SMS-based authentication codes.
In a recent blog post, Google’s product managers acknowledged that passwords can still be used but are often inconvenient to remember and pose risks if compromised by cybercriminals.
Passkeys are exclusively tied to devices, which means that users can configure them for their Google accounts by accessing g.co/passkeys and following the provided instructions.
Going ‘password-Free’
Google announced its vision of a password-less future last year after a decade of development. In order to improve security, the company introduced users to its 2-Step Verification and Google Password Manager. Since then, passkeys have been integrated into Chrome and Android, as well as various services such as Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo! Japan.
