Samsung announced 108MP camera that will support 6K 30 FPS video recording.

Xiaomi confirmed that it is partnering up with Samsung and will introducing a phone with a 108MP camera. Now, the Korean manufacturer has unveiled the sensor in question, called the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX.

Samsung told us that the new sensor has 0.8 micron pixels in simple words same size as current 48 MP and 64 M-P cameras. The sensor also uses pixel data binning to give pictures that are comparable to a 27 M-P 1.6 micron pixel camera.

The 48 MP and 64 MP sensors use pixel binning to give pictures that are comparable to a 12MP and 16MP 1.6 micron pixel camera. In simple words, you should theoretically expect the ISOCELL Bright HMX will give almost same low light performance as previous ultra high-resolution sensors. We might get more detail from the 108 MP, but only testing will tell.

Samsung is keeping same pixel size as 48 megapixel and 64 megapixel sensors because of 1-1.33 inch sensor size that is used by the 108 megapixel camera sensor. Therefore this sensor is larger than Samsung 64 megapixel G.W-1 {1-1.72 inch} and 48 megapixel cameras {1-2 inch}.

Samsung told our insider that the sensor also makes use of Smart ISO technology, and is able to shoot 6 K video {6,016 by 3,384} at 30 fps. they did not comment on 960 fps super slow motion, but 64MP and 48MP don’t support the tech. So it stands to reason that the 108MP sensor lacks the required hardware.

Samsung clams mass production of the ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor begins later this month. This suggests we could see a 108 MP phone before the end of the year. In fact, it’s rumored that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be the first device to pack Samsung’s new sensor.
