Companies try really hard to secure their platforms and services but still apps have, vulnerabilities and bugs will always slip through the cracks. Last week this is what happened when Facebook announced a severe video security flaw in messaging app WhatsApp.

Attackers can trigger stack based buffer overflow bug by sending a specially crafted MP4 file. The exploit can cause refuse the service or remote code execution attacks.

WhatsApp introduces new privacy settings in group chat

The reason it works because of how the service parses MP4 elementary stream metadata. The WhatsApp version prior to 2.19.274 and iOS app versions prior to 2.19.100 have this security flaw . Even the prior versions of the WhatsApp enterprise, Windows Phone, Business for Android, and Business for iOS clients are affected.

We don’t thing the bug has been actively exploited, but users should update their apps to alleviate the risk of attack.
